Selectable Clutch

This clutch is designed for drivetrains used in HEVs, PHEVs, and BEVs.
Compared to conventional wet multi-plate clutches and dog clutches, this clutch enables seamless power switching, contributing to improved responsiveness and reduced noise.
Furthermore, selecting the appropriate mode according to driving conditions reduces energy loss during slip, enabling highly efficient vehicle operation.

Product Structure

Workings

At high rotational speeds, centrifugal force causes the sub-roller to support the main roller.

1 way mode

When the selector is pushed in the axial direction, it rotates along the inclined surface, causing the roller to come into contact with the inner ring.

2 way free

When the axial load applied to the selector is released, the selector returns along the inclined surface, disengaging the roller from the inner ring.

Function It switches between a two-way free mode and a one-way lock mode for two shafts arranged on the same axis.
Advantages
  • Operable with a two-mode (ON/OFF) actuator
    (No three-mode actuator required)
  • Achieves improved responsiveness and reduced noise through seamless power switching
  • Stable torque transmission even at high rotational speeds
  • Reduction of idle friction torque

Application Examples

Replacement for Dog Clutches and Wet Multi-Plate Clutches

This cam-type selectable clutch enables more seamless operation compared to dog clutches, and achieves similar functionality to wet multi-plate clutches with fewer peripheral components. (Note that the control method differs.) This clutch is particularly well suited for seamless switching mechanisms—such as transmission systems and power disconnects—that prioritize one-way mode operation.
